10 Things I Want to do Before I Turn 16: #3 Getting a “Job”
I love going out and shopping with friends, however I do not like spending money. I knew I needed a balance of income for when I go out with friends.
It started off as babysitting over the summer for a family, but that was only for 3 months and I needed something year-round. I then started babysitting during the school year whenever anyone in my neighborhood needed me. The bad thing with babysitting is that I couldn’t control when I wanted to work, I could only wait until someone contacted me.
I tried to come up with ideas for months, but nothing came up. Although it seems simple enough to go and get a job at a restaurant, it wasn’t that easy.
I play competitive softball, which takes up a lot of time. For instance, this coming summer, I will only be home for 1 or 2 days a week for 6 weeks straight. I also have 3–5 hour practices when I don’t have tournaments. The only off time I have is during the fall and winter, but I still have tournaments and practices, they are just local.
After the fall season, I head straight into high school ball, and we practice everyday after school until 5:30. I didn’t want to overload myself with schoolwork, practices, and a job.
I got to thinking again, knowing that I need to start saving money towards college and my future. I finally got an idea!
My best friend had started Door Dashing with her mom to make money. I wanted to do this so bad, but you have to be 18 years or older to become a Door Dasher.
I immediately went and begged my mom. She said yes, as long as we used my car. We applied and started the next day. I drove and picked up the food and also delivered it to the customer while my mom sat in the passenger seat and directed me.
We went out three other times that same week. These past few weeks since we signed up, I have gone out with my mom 2–3 times a week for an average of 3 hours each time.
It has made it so much easier to hang out with friends knowing that I have money on my card and my savings. I still babysit from time to time, but I enjoy Door Dashing very much!
